Anglia Ruskin University has its origins in the Cambridge School of Art. It was given to John Ruskin (often erroneously described as the founder by William John Beemont’s inauguration speech in 1858; in fact, he founded Ruskin College of Painting in Oxford). The original site was near Sidney Sussex College and later moved to the current site on Cambridge East Road. The governing body of the 1920s included two outstanding pioneers in Cambridge civic history, Clara Dorothea Lakham and Lillian Melish Clark. The buildings on the East Road campus were later named after them. In 1960, this became the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT). In 1989, it merged with the Essex College of Higher Education. The college and the Chermo College of Higher Education form the Anglia College of Higher Education. The merged college became a polytechnic in 1991, using the name Anglia Polytechnic Institute, and then obtained university status in 1992.
