Construction of the Heritage Hall began on January 18, 1921, five years after the establishment of the Calgary Institute of Technology and Arts (PITA) in 1916. Designed by Alberta architect Richard Palin Blakey and built by J. McDiarmid Company. The focal point of this three-story modern building in Winnipeg is the central entrance, flanked by two large towers. Its design has a university Gothic architecture. Characteristics, it was very popular throughout North America at that time. Although university Gothic architecture prevails in higher education, the Heritage Hall is the only example of Calgary. The Heritage Hall will be completed later in 1922 and will house PITA and Calgary Normal School. During World War II, the structure was used as a wireless training school for the Commonwealth Aviation Training Program. The structure is deliberately located in Calgary’s North Hills to maximize the visibility of the entire Calgary structure and provide a city view from the building. The building was originally named “Provincial Institute of Technology Building and Normal School”, and was renamed “Cultural Relics Hall” in 1985
